Historic! The Artemis II mission returns to Earth "riding a fireball"
After breaking distance records in deep space, the Artemis II crew prepares for the most critical moment of their journey: atmospheric reentry.
📍 What you need to know about the return:
The destination: A landing off the coast of San Diego, California.
The time: Today Friday, around 8:00 PM (ET).
The challenge: The Orion capsule must enter the atmosphere with a margin of error of just ±1 degree. An incorrect angle could mean bouncing back into space or disintegrating from the heat.
"Traversing the atmosphere riding a fireball is something profoundly impactful." — Victor Glover, mission pilot.
🛡️ Technology and survival
To withstand extreme temperatures, the crew module will separate from the service module 20 minutes before impact. The heat shield will be the only ally for the astronauts against the fire generated by hypersonic friction.
Additionally, astronauts are already using compression garments to mitigate the effects of Earth’s gravity after days of weightlessness.
Are we at the definitive start of a new lunar era? Today's success clears the way for humanity to step back on the surface of the Moon in the coming years. 🌕🛰️
